El Enemigo

Mendoza, Argentina

The name means the enemy. Alejandro Vigil's idea is that the real enemy is yourself — the internal fight every winemaker has. It is the most visually distinctive bottle on any Renzo's table.

The side project that grew

Founded around 2009 by Alejandro Vigil — Catena Zapata's winemaking director — with Adrianna Catena. The winery name, Bodega Aleanna, is Ale plus Anna. Fruit comes from Gualtallary, Agrelo and Chacayes.

Where he does what won't fit

This is the day-job-versus-passion-project brand. The same man who runs Catena Zapata makes El Enemigo on the side, and it is where he does the things that would not fit a larger house style — pushing Cabernet Franc instead of Malbec, and ageing some whites under flor, the yeast veil borrowed from sherry in Jerez.

The bottle itself

The labels are collages by the artist Sebastián Britos, built from early-twentieth-century Argentine imagery, and every bottle is finished with hand-tied string and a wax-style seal. Guests notice it across the room.

On the record

#29 World's Best Vineyards 2024. Gran Enemigo Agrelo 2019 took 97 points from both Parker and Vinous; Gran Enemigo Gualtallary 97 from Jeb Dunnuck; the El Enemigo Chardonnay 96 from James Suckling. Cabernet Franc is the house calling card.
